Cereplast

A couple of weeks ago I happened to be watching the Sundance Channel. How I got there I'll never know...I guess I was just channel surfing. Anyways, there was an interesting program showcasing "Green" products where a gentleman was talking about how traditional plastics are made with oil which takes 100 million years to occur in nature. We then use the plastics for about 45 minutes like in take out containers or plastic water bottles, and then they go back into the landfill where they remain for over 500 years because they don't biodegrade. That sounds like a complete waste of natural resources, not to mention the impact to landfills.

Cereplast is a company that makes compostable and hybrid plastics made of corn, potatoes, and tapioca. This company is in it's early development stages; however, earlier this month, the company reported revenue of $1.6 million, a 258% increase year over year. The company attributed this predominantly to the commercial launch of Cereplast Compostables. While these earnings are encouraging, the company is still in the red and continues to issue shares as a means to finance operations. Total outstanding shares for the third quarter were 258.2 compared to 200.4 million during 2006. I picked up 1,000 shares as a pure speculative play that may be worth watching considering the price of a barrel of oil is approaching the century mark...I probably should have just gone to Vegas. This one will be fun to watch and has made me more environmentally/ recycling conscious. Click here for the video clip.

Mini Reunion

Last night Marisa and I met some old high school friends for dinner as we had a lot to celebrate. Kelly and Stephanie were celebrating their (12th??) wedding anniversary at the new NoRTH restaurant in the Domain, so we decided to crash the party. Bill and Audrey are in town for the next several weeks from Colorado because they are expecting their first child and want the baby to be born in Texas near family. They still don't know if the baby is a boy or a girl...how exciting! And, of course, Marisa and I are still celebrating our engagement. Kimmo and his wife, Jana, joined us as well. Marisa and I ran into Kimmo and Jana at a UT tailgate party on our first date in Austin about two years ago, but haven't seen them since. I hadn't seen Bill since our trip to San Francisco several years ago when Richard proposed to Lauren. It was really nice to see everyone again. I had some good, hearty, crying laughs as our conversations quickly seem to derail as we reminisce about the past. Hopefully we will see them all again soon at the wedding.

Priceless

Wine Tasting at Becker Vineyard-$23
An Engagement Ring-$XXXXX
Asking a Woman to Marry You and She Says "Yes"-PRICELESS

I hate to relate my engagement to a commercial marketing campaign, but it is a good one and I did purchase the engagement ring and the wine tasting using my MasterCard (for the points)!

On September 1st, Marisa and I decided to go the annual Grape Stomp at Becker Vineyards between Johnson City and Fredricksburg. For all she knew, it was supposed to be a quiet Labor Day weekend with just the two of us at Horseshoe Bay. The day started with us running to a restaurant two miles away for breakfast with a leisurely walk back to help burn off the delicious breakfast burrito. We then headed off to Becker about 40 miles south of Horseshoe Bay and Marble Falls.

To my dismay, when we arrived the parking lot was full. We have been to several vineyards in the hill country and usually there are only a handful of people at each which makes for a very unique and personalized experience. I guess the Grape Stomp is a big hit; there must have been at least 100 couples. To make matters worse, it had started to drizzle so the guests were gathered inside the tasting room and under the porches to keep dry instead of spread across the beautiful courtyard. I was hoping to find a secluded area so that we could have some privacy, but privacy tended to elude me. I had never been to Becker before and was pretty much winging it. The only constraint was that we needed to be in San Antonio by 7 p.m. to meet some friends and family to celebrate.

I was nervous and wasn't too sure about what I was going to say. However, the day before I had lunch with a good friend who told me not to worry about it. He said that it is similar to a Charlie Brown special; all the women hear is "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, Will You Marry Me?" Remembering this tended to put my mind at ease. But, I was constantly glancing around trying to find the perfect spot while keeping an eye on my watch...I calculated that I would pop the question around 5:15 because we needed to be on our way to San Antonio by 5:45. I kept feeling the outline of the ring in my pocket to make sure it was still there; I didn't bring the ring in the box because it was too big and would certainly be too obvious.

During our wine tasting, we just happened to be served by the vineyard's wedding coordinator. She and Marisa spoke about weddings as Marisa promoted her event planning business, Charmed Events. At one point in the conversation the coordinator asked when we were going to get engaged. I thought to myself this would be a perfect segue to a proposal but quickly regained by senses and refrained...I didn't want to propose on the floor of a wine tasting room. But if they only knew that the ring was in my pocket.

Finally, I found a great little wrought iron table sitting by itself with a couple of wooden rocking chairs under the porch of the bed and breakfast. We sat at the table and enjoyed the wine with our cheese and crackers. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous with a large oak tree and vineyards in the background along with the smell of fresh lavender and rain. I knew this was the perfect time (not to mention that it was about 10 minutes past 5pm). I got down on one knee and proposed.

Marisa had no idea what I was doing, and I caught her significantly off guard. She accepted simultaneously as she began to cry. There was a couple walking by who probably initially thought this was an unhappy occasion rather than a joyous one. They congratulated us, and we asked them to take a picture for posterity.

Jorge

Marisa and I went to a charity event last night in San Antonio, For the Love of Kids & Harleys. It was a really nice event benefitting children's charities in San Antonio. We had the pleasure of meeting George Strait. He was quite personable and surprisingly funny. We told him that he should make another movie, and he replied that he couldn't because Dusty died.

I'm Back

I just noticed my last post was back in 2005. I'm going to start blogging again to chronicle my new training program which I plan to begin next week. As luck would have it, I came down with a cold last weekend, but I'm feeling much better now. I stopped running due to various demands both personally and professionally, and before I knew it I gained about 25 lbs...actually I gained it back over the last year and a half. My goal is to train for the AT&T half marathon in Austin in February and lose most of the recent weight. I'll post pictures to track the progress. Stay tuned.
